Supporting the Homeless Savings Account

Our Help the Homeless Account encompasses affinity savings accounts for a number of charities, all working to combat homelessness. The account is an evolution of our previous affinity accounts with more benefits. For you, the saver, a better rate of interest is available which increases as your balance does, and for the nominated charity, greater long term financial support from us.

All of the accounts operate in the same way. All you have to do is select which of the charities you would like to support. Below there is some more information on each of the charities under the Help the Homeless umbrella. There is a link to each charity’s website should you wish to read more in depth about its aims and achievements.

On an annual basis we will calculate the average balance of your account and donate 1.00% to your selected charity.

With aggregate balances of £2,000,000 we will be able to make a potential donation of over £20,000 each year.

The Cardinal Hume Centre was founded in 1986 by Cardinal Basil Hume. It works in Westminster with homeless young people, badly housed families and local communities to access accommodation, support, advice, training and education.

Westminster has the highest homeless population in all of the UK. But for many homeless people, it is not enough to simply provide a bed for a night. What is needed is a nurturing and supportive environment where young and vulnerable people can access a range of services and facilities that will allow them to find and develop the skills – and the confidence – to re-enter society.

Here at the Cardinal Hume Centre, we have a thirty-six-bedroom hostel for sixteen to twenty-one year olds and a smaller hostel for those recovering from substance mis-use, where our dedicated staff encourage residents to access education, training and permanent accommodation. A drop-on centre where homeless young people can find information on benefits, accommodation and have access to basic necessities. We provide English lessons to those who are seeking to improve their language skills, and an IT suite where clients can take an accredited course to learn computer skills. Our Family Centre provides support, advice, and a nurturing environment for badly housed families with pre-school children. We also have on site a fully staffed NHS clinic that provides medical treatment for homeless people as well as drug and alcohol counselling.

The Cardinal Hume Centre has recently completed an extensive renovation project, and an improvement of the facilities and services it provides. This year, our twentieth, sees us launching out twentieth birthday appeal that aims to raise our profile and the funds required to sustain this new level of service.

Emmaus logo

Homelessness is not just about having no place to live. It’s about losing your independence and purpose in life, being isolated, humiliated and ignored. Emmaus tackles these problems through a network of self-supporting Communities, where homeless people are offered a home, meaningful work and the chance to recover their self-respect in a supportive environment

Founded in France in 1949 by the Abbé Pierre, a Roman Catholic priest, there are now over 400 secular Communities worldwide. Ten years’ ago the movement came to the UK, where 9 Communities are now established, with a further 18 under development as the need is so great. Emmaus Communities offer homeless people a totally practical way in which they can move from homelessness and dependency on state benefits to taking responsibility for their own lives by living and working in self-supporting Communities. In Emmaus homeless people find a welcome and somewhere they can call home, a place of safety. Everyone is accepted for who they are, not judged for what they might have been. All Companions (as residents are called) have a room of their own and work together, refurbishing and selling donated goods, the proceeds of which support the Community.

Joining a Community is a new beginning, and although there is no limit to length of stay, the prospect of moving on to independence is a real possibility. The Communities offer a supportive family environment, and a real way out of the isolation, despair and rejection of living rough on the streets.

Supporting the Homeless Affinity Account

Railway Children logo

The Railway Children is a very special charity that has been working internationally on behalf of street children for over 5 years. Its special purpose is to make early contact with homeless children who are running away from abusive family situations, being sent into cities to earn money for desperate families or who have been abandoned or orphaned, many as a result of civil conflict or AIDS. The Railway Children work with local partners on railway or bus stations worldwide where many of these children first arrive and then fall victim to criminals who wickedly exploit them.

The Railway Children currently has eighteen partner projects in Great Britain, India, Romania, Mexico and Kenya. The Society decided to extend its links and help in a more permanent manner by introducing its first Affinity Account. For every £100 you invest the Society will pay £1 toThe Railway Children.
